Importance of Solar Inspection

Solar inspections play a crucial role in maintaining the safety, efficiency, and long-term value of any solar energy system. Over time, environmental exposure, electrical wear, and structural stress can slowly impact how well a system performs. Regular inspections help identify and resolve these issues before they become serious.

  • Preventing gradual performance loss
Dirt buildup, loose wiring, weakened mounting hardware, or increased shading can slowly reduce a system’s energy output. Inspections help detect these factors early so owners can restore optimal performance before losses become significant.
  • Detecting safety hazards before they escalate
Electrical systems can develop issues such as overheating wires, damaged breakers, or poor grounding. Even minor defects can lead to major risks if left unnoticed. Inspections ensure that potential hazards are addressed promptly, protecting both people and property.
  • Maintaining compliance with electrical codes and utility standards
Alberta requires solar installations to meet specific safety and wiring requirements. A regular inspection confirms that the system remains compliant, which helps avoid technical issues with grid connections or utility interactions.
  • Extending system lifespan and protecting financial investment

Solar systems are designed to last 20 to 30 years, but their longevity depends on proper care. Inspections help prevent premature degradation, ensuring the owner continues receiving cost savings and reliable energy for the full life of the system. Ensuring consistent and expected energy production

By reviewing real-time performance and comparing it to expected output levels, inspections verify that the system is producing the correct amount of power. Any inconsistencies can be investigated and resolved quickly.

Types of Systems We Inspect

Evalence Renewables provides solar inspection services for a wide variety of installations across Alberta. This includes residential grid-tied systems, which are the most common among homeowners looking to reduce utility costs and take advantage of Alberta’s microgeneration program. These systems often remain exposed to changing weather conditions and natural wear, making regular inspections important to maintain their long-term performance and safety.

We also inspect commercial solar arrays, whether they are installed on large rooftops or built as ground-mount systems on open land. Commercial projects typically involve higher voltages, larger equipment, and more complex wiring layouts, which require a detailed and systematic inspection approach to ensure they continue to operate reliably and meet safety standards.

In addition to grid-tied systems, our team is experienced in evaluating battery-based solar systems, including hybrid setups and full off-grid configurations. These systems rely heavily on the condition of their storage components, charge controllers, and enclosures, so thorough inspections help confirm battery health, proper charging behavior, and safe installation practices.

We also support municipalities and organizations that use solar technology in public infrastructure—such as pathway lighting, signage, monitoring equipment, and remote power units. These smaller but widely distributed systems benefit greatly from periodic inspections to ensure they remain dependable throughout Alberta’s diverse weather conditions.

What’s Included in a Professional Solar Inspection

A professional solar inspection with Evalence Renewables is carried out using a detailed and standardized checklist to make sure every component of the system is functioning safely and efficiently. Each part of the installation—panels, wiring, electronics, batteries, and loads—is examined carefully, with photos and recorded readings included in the final report.

Solar Panel Inspection

The process starts with a close evaluation of the solar panels and mounting system. Inspectors confirm that every panel is securely fastened, with no signs of rusted bolts, loose hardware, or structural movement. The orientation and tilt are assessed to ensure they align with the site’s optimal solar exposure—typically facing south, with no shading from trees, poles, or nearby structures. The panel surfaces are examined for cracks, chips, delamination, or glass damage, and the wiring at the back of the panels is checked to ensure all conductors are protected and properly strain-relieved. Junction boxes must be sealed and weatherproof to prevent moisture intrusion. Voltage output readings are taken at the panel terminals and recorded, and inspectors capture clear photos of the front and back of each panel, including serial numbers, along with written comments documenting any observations.

Charge Controller / Power Electronics

The inspection then moves to the charge controller or power electronics, where inspectors verify that the controller is mounted securely and protected from weather exposure. Indicator lights, display screens, and alarm codes are reviewed and documented, and the input voltage from the solar array is measured to ensure it matches the expected panel output. Output voltage from the controller to the battery system is also recorded. Inspectors look for any signs of corrosion, overheating, or water damage and confirm that all wiring terminations are tight, labeled correctly, and safely enclosed. Any findings or irregularities are noted in the comment section for the controller.

Battery System

For systems equipped with storage, the battery system undergoes a detailed examination. Inspectors confirm that the battery enclosure is secure, dry, and properly ventilated where applicable.

The type of battery could be identified as:

  • AGM
  • lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄)
  • flooded lead-acid

Terminals are checked to ensure they are clean, tight, and free from corrosion. Voltage readings are taken both under no-load and under-load conditions, providing insight into the health and performance of the storage unit. Safety components such as fuses and breakers between the battery and controller are verified, polarity is confirmed, and battery age or manufacturing labels are documented whenever available. Photos of the battery, terminals, and identification labels are included in the final report.

Lighting / Load Verification

The inspection also covers lighting or load verification for systems that power lighting or similar equipment. Inspectors confirm that all lights operate correctly—whether controlled manually, triggered by a photocell, or managed by a timer—and ensure that fixtures are securely mounted and free from damage. Wiring connections are checked for proper weather sealing and protection from physical impact. Current draw measurements are recorded when accessible, and photos of each fixture are added to the report.

Electrical Safety & Grounding

Another important component of the inspection is the review of electrical safety and grounding. Inspectors verify that all wiring is sized appropriately, properly insulated, and protected by conduit or sheathing where exposed. Grounding is confirmed through continuity testing to ensure the panel frames and system enclosures are bonded correctly. Safety devices such as fuses, breakers, and disconnect switches must be clearly labeled and easily accessible. Any loose wires, makeshift tape repairs, or open junctions are identified and documented, along with supporting photographs.

Overall Performance & Functionality

To complete the evaluation, inspectors assess overall system performance and functionality. This includes identifying any shading, structural damage, or configuration issues that could affect output. They also take note of vandalism, environmental damage, or any signs that energy production has been compromised. Any concerns related to output, efficiency, or system lifespan are clearly explained in the final report.

What You Receive in Your Inspection Report

Following the inspection, clients receive a detailed report that outlines the condition of the entire system.

This report includes:

  • clear photographs of key components
  • measurable test results
  •  an explanation of any safety concerns
  • maintenance issues discovered during the visit.

Each observation is categorized based on urgency—distinguishing between immediate repairs and recommendations that can be monitored over time. The report also includes a simple pass-or-fail summary to help owners understand the overall status of their installation without needing technical expertise.

When Should You Schedule an Inspection?

There are several ideal times to schedule a solar inspection. Many homeowners and businesses request an inspection immediately after installation to ensure everything was assembled correctly. Annual inspections are highly recommended, as they allow early detection of issues that develop gradually over time. Storms, strong winds, or physical impacts can also justify an inspection, as these events may loosen equipment or damage electrical components without being immediately noticeable.

Before selling a property, an inspection provides peace of mind to both the seller and buyer, confirming that the solar system is in proper working condition. Additionally, if there is a sudden decline in energy production or your monitoring app displays unusual alerts, this is a clear sign that an inspection is needed.
