10 Reasons Solar Doesn't Work in Alberta

Disclaimer: This article is satirical in nature and intended for educational and entertainment purposes. Evalence Renewables is a proud supporter of renewable energy and is committed to promoting solar education and adoption in the Province of Alberta.

At Evalence Renewables, we regularly participate in trade shows where we meet members of the public who are interested in exploring solar for their properties (and some who are not interested at all). This article is a compilation of the most common solar objections we've heard at the home shows so far in 2024 and 2025. We hope you enjoy the humor!

Bonus Solar Myths Video:

1. Too Much Snow

"The snow will bury my panels, rendering them useless!"

Alberta winters are harsh, and snow definitely falls here. But did you know that snow is accounted for during the solar design process at Evalence, so we ensure the system will produce enough energy to meet your needs? Additionally snow can sometimes enhance solar production! When the sun reflects off the white, fluffy ground, it increases the energy hitting solar panels. Plus, snow generally slides off the panels because of their slick surface and optimal tilt—making your roof cleaner than ever. But hey, if you prefer snow-covered shingles, who are we to argue?

2. Not Enough Sun

"There’s no way we get enough sun in Alberta for solar power."

Alberta averages over 300 sunny days a year, more than many places thriving on solar power. But yes, you're absolutely right: the blazing ball of fire in the sky can't possibly keep up with your microwave’s insatiable energy demands. Good call!

3. Hail Every Summer

"Hail will destroy my panels every single year."

Hailstorms are a fact of life here, but modern solar panels are built to withstand hail and come with industry-leading warranties and hail certifications. If your truck’s windshield can survive Alberta weather, your solar panels will too. Still, maybe keep holding out for hail-proof tarps instead.

4. Government is Against It

"The government doesn’t want us to have solar power!"

Sure, Alberta’s government has a complicated history with renewable energy, but the federal and municipal programs currently available suggest someone up there is rooting for you. Keep in mind, we also have favorable electricity export rules for residential solar producers (Microgeneration Sites). But if believing in shadowy conspiracies about government solar suppression is more fun, who are we to spoil the mystery?

5. I Will Die Before It's Paid Off

"It’ll take so long to pay off, I’ll be dead by then!"

Well, that's one way to measure return on investment. But most systems pay themselves off in 7-12 years, and with 25+ years of warrantied production, your heirs will thank you. Unless, of course, you’d rather leave them the gift of skyrocketing energy bills.

6. My Roof Will Leak

"Solar panels will cause my roof to leak!"

Professional solar installers (like, say, Evalence Renewables) ensure your roof remains watertight and structurally sound. We’ll even show you how the mounting system protects your shingles. But if you'd rather avoid the risk of “hypothetical leaks”, you could always just stare longingly at your empty rooftop.

7. It's Made in China

"It’s all cheap stuff from China."

Yes, most solar panels are manufactured overseas. However, some of the best panel manufacturers are located in China! Evalence sources the best panels from trusted manufacturers. But hey, if local pride means skipping savings and sustainability, that’s a choice too.

8. I Am Waiting on More Grants

"I’ll just wait until there’s a better grant program."

By all means, wait for the perfect grant—and while you’re at it, let inflation, rising utility rates, and missed savings keep adding up. After all, timing is everything…or is it just procrastination disguised as optimism?

9. No ROI

"Solar doesn’t give me any return on investment."

A typical solar system in Alberta can generate tens of thousands of dollars in energy savings over its lifespan, not to mention protecting you from rising utility rates. But if you'd rather let your money flow into your utility provider’s pocket instead of your own, you do you.

10. It's a Scam!

"The whole solar industry is just a giant scam!"

The solar industry has come a long way from its early days. Reputable companies like Evalence are here to provide transparent, professional service. Like any industry, you can find bad actors - however reputable, local companies exist to install your solar panels. But if "it’s a scam" helps you sleep better at night while clutching your monthly power bill, who are we to interrupt your dreams?

Conclusion

So, there you have it: ten reasons why solar “doesn’t work” in Alberta, debunked with a dash of sarcasm and a sprinkle of sunshine. At Evalence, we speak with Alberta homeowners every day who are interested in solar energy but still unsure how the financial side really works. Many people understand that solar panels generate electricity, but they’re less clear on how that energy translates into real savings on their power bill. The reality is this: one of the biggest reasons solar is so effective in Alberta is net metering , also known as the micro-generation credit system . It’s the behind-the-scenes framework that allows homeowners to turn excess solar production into meaningful, long-term savings. If you’ve ever wondered how unused solar energy gets credited, why summer production still helps in winter, or how solar keeps electricity costs more predictable, this guide walks you through it — simply and clearly.
