Get Paid to Charge Your EV at Home in Canada (2026 Guide)
We've all felt the squeeze at the pump. The stress of volatile fuel costs. Switching to an EV is an obvious cost saver, which is why many drivers across Canada have been weighing the switch. However, simply going electric is only half the savings equation: Paid home charging programs are the other half, paying you for the electricity you already use.
When, where, and how you charge your EV are often overlooked but crucial parts of EV ownership - especially for drivers in Alberta. Investing in a Level 2 charger is the elegant solution that many savvy drivers consider for performance, charging speeds, and deeper savings. For new and seasoned EV owners, paid home charging programs make these charging solutions more accessible by helping you make the upgrade and paying you to use it.

Paid EV Home Charging Programs in Canada - Everything You Need to Know
Quick Answer
Paid home charging programs pay Canadian EV owners approximately $0.03/kWh-$0.15/kWh for charging at home, funded by Canadian Fuel Regulations and federal carbon credits. There are many programs that offer unique benefits, and a typical driver charging 4,000kWh per year could between $120-$400 in their first year.
What are paid home charging programs?
Canada has been steadily increasing incentives to enter the renewable energy space. One such policy is the Clean Fuel Regulations (CFR). In short: businesses that use gas and diesel "buy" carbon credits to offset their emissions. These credits are "generated" and sold by other businesses who utilize low-carbon fuels or electrification in their operations. Paid Home Charging Programs take advantage of these regulations by:
- Connecting a large network of chargers together, pooling charging data and reporting the power consumption.
- Using those reports to generate and sell federal carbon credits; sharing a portion of the revenue with its program members.
With this design, programs compete against each other. As a result, there are plenty of options with various benefits and earning structures!
What does it cost to register, and who qualifies?
It's possible that registration could require an upfront investment. Potential costs include:
- The cost of having the charger installed, along with any necessary electrical work to complete the install.
- The cost of the charger itself OR refundable deposit for the charger (depending on the program).
- Membership fees/Participation fees
- As of September 2026, most rewards programs charge $0 in membership fees while the current CFR regulations remain in place.
To qualify, you generally need to confirm two things:
- You live in a single family home, or otherwise have the right/approval to have your own personal charger installed.
- Your home has a consistent Wi-Fi network to keep the charger connected.
Living in a condo or townhouse complex may disqualify you from some, but not all programs. Programs that do support multi-family homes do have further requirements:
- You have an individual electricity meter or panel that is linked to your unit.
- You have control over your WiFi network.
How much could you earn?
Earnings vary between programs, and exact earnings are relative to how much power you consume. The amount you charge is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), so programs quote their rewards in dollars per kWh ($/kWh).
Many programs pay rates that are comparable to the rates you pay for home electricity, which means you could be breaking even or profiting when you charge!
Paid Home EV Charging in Alberta
Paid home charging programs are exciting for EV owners across Canada, and even more so for Albertan Drivers.
Your EV's reliability and performance in our climate is significantly related to your charging solution, and Level 2 chargers are the gold standard:
- Charging significantly faster and is much more energy efficient than standard Level 1 charging cables.
- Offers scheduled charging, taking advantage of off-peak rates (energy plan permitting).
- Schedules heating of your battery and interior, maintaining your battery's performance through freezing winter months.
We recommend all Albertan EV owners to consider installing a Level 2 charging solution and further register for a paid home charging program to maximize both the performance of your EV, and your savings potential.
Comparing Popular Programs Across Canada
To illustrate what difference in benefits you could expect between programs, we've chosen three of the most popular programs to examine: SWTCH Home Charging Program, ChargeLab Rewards, and Grizzl-E Club. Each program differs through different rewards, costs, and earnings rates. By comparing each program against the other, we aim to help you gauge what is most important to your particular case!
To keep the comparison fair, every estimate in this guide uses the same reference driver who:
- Owns an average, mid-sized EV.
- Drives 20,000km (or charges roughly 4,000kWh) per year.
Of course, your own numbers will vary with your vehicle and driving habits. Now, lets compare some programs!
SWTCH Home Charging Program
View the SWTCH Home Charging Program here
Toronto based SWTCH was founded in 2016, and launched their rewards program in December, 2025. SWTCH Home Charging Program stands out by having a low barrier of entry: registry only requires a $300 refundable deposit. After 1,500 kWh charged, this deposit is returned and members jump to a higher earnings rate.
- Deposit/Upfront Cost: $300 + Shipping.
- Earning Rate ($/kWh): $0.03/kWh, increasing to $0.11/kWh after 1,500kWh charged.
- Payout Frequency: Every $100 earned via Direct Deposit.
- Registration: Online.
- Perks: Free Level 2 Charger. Consistent cash payouts.
Our reference driver consumes 1,500kWh in just under 5 months, earning their deposit back and jumping to the high earning rate. Excluding the deposit, our driver would earn roughly
$320 for their first year, and approximately
$440/year afterwards - not bad!
ChargeLab Rewards

ChargeLab was founded in Toronto, Canada as an EV software company. ChargeLab Rewards launched in July 2025 as a software-only rewards program. ChargeLab Rewards is simply an app: you are required to own your own charger that is Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) compatible.
- Deposit/Upfront Cost: Price of charger ($300-$1200).
- Earning Rate ($/kWh): $0.10/kWh.
- Payout Frequency: Quarterly via gift cards (cash payouts coming by the end of 2026).
- Registration: Online via app.
- Perks: Wide range of chargers to choose from. High earning rate upon registry.
This is a great option for drivers who may already own a charger, or who have a specific preference in charger. Our example driver can expect to earn roughly $400 each year, starting the second the charger is registered to their system!
NOTE: Note that chargers may advertise OCPP compatibility, but charge a fee to access.
Grizzl-E Club
View the Grizzl-E Club here
Grizzl-E is a Canadian manufacturer of EV equipment, founded in 2019. Alongside their chargers, Grizzl-E offers a rewards program that is split between two tiers: Essentials Club and Premium Club.
Essentials Club:
Deposit/Upfront Cost: $100 (refunded after your first charge).
Earning Rate ($/kWh): $0.03/kWh - $0.10/kWh, increasing by $0.01/5,000kWh charged.
Payout Frequency: Upon request once per month via EFT.
Perks: Free charger with option to purchase & join the Premium Club at a later date.
The low investment comes with a slow, shallow ramp. -Our reference driver takes roughly 9 years to reach the top rate of $0.10/kWh, earning roughly $120 in their first year.
Premium Club:
Deposit/Upfront Cost: Cost of charger ($500-$1200)
Earning Rate ($/kWh): $0.10/kWh - $0.15/kWh, increasing by $0.01/5,000kWh charged.
Payout Frequency: Upon request once per month via EFT.
Perks: Highest earning potential, increasing over time.
Premium Club has the highest ceiling between every program in this guide. Our reference driver would earn roughly $400 in year one - nearly "paying off" the cost of the charger and ending the year at roughly 80% of the way to the $0.11/kWh rate.
| Program | Upfront cost | Earning rate | First year earnings | Payout structure | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SWTCH Home Charging Program | $300 refundable deposit+ Shipping | $0.03, $0.11 after 1,500kWh charged | Roughly $320 | Direct deposit every $100 | Drivers without a charger |
| ChargeLab Rewards | Charger cost ($300-$1,200), or an already owned charger | $0.10/kWh | Roughly $400 | Quarterly, gift cards (cash payouts planned by end of 2026) | Drivers who own or prefer a specific charger |
| Grizzl-E Essentials Club | $100, refundable after first charge | $0.03/kWh, rises every 5,000kWh. $0.10/kWh cap | Roughly $120 | Monthly on request, EFT | Lowest upfront cost |
| Grizzl-E Premium Club | Charger cost ($500-$1,200), or pre owned Grizzl-E charger | $0.10/kWh, rises every 5,000kWh. $0.15/kWh cap | Roughly $400 | Monthly on request, EFT | Highest long-term ceiling |

Which paid home charging program is right for you?
There are enough options to make your head spin! The first step you should take is to ask yourself:
- Do you already own a charger, or do you have a preference for a specific charger?
- How much are you willing to invest to register?
- Would you rather have a higher earning rate now, or the highest possible long-term return?
If you don't own a charger and have no preference:
- Recommendation: SWTCH Home Charging Program
With the lowest barrier to entry and an earning structure that begins to outperform flat-rate options after a few years, this program is a strong choice if you're just starting your EV journey.
If you do own a charger or want a specific model:
- Recommendation: ChargeLab Rewards
If your charger is already installed and OCPP compatible, you may be able to register and start earning right away.
Why we don't recommend Grizzl-E Premium for most drivers (right now):
Although this program has the highest earning potential out of the other programs evaluated, there is a catch. Environment and Climate Change Canada will review CFR regulations starting in 2027, and plan to revise policy after 2030. Due to this, new members may not have enough time in the program to take advantage of this program's high rates. On top of that, Grizzl-E chargers carry a $600 CAD fee to enable OCPP compatibility. For the average driver, that makes it quite hard to recommend this program today.
Conclusion
The low barrier to efficient at home charging and significant savings mean that paid home charging programs are a must-consider for EV owners across Canada. With the right program, many drivers could offset their EV's electricity costs or even come out ahead.
